What is Manga?

Manga are comics that are created in Japan. The word manga comes from the Japanese word 漫画, which composed of the kanji (漫) man meaning whimsical or impromptu and (画) ga meaning pictures. Usually, the art in manga has a definite look to it and may referred to as "Manga Style."





How to read Manga?
As manga came from Japan, it follows the Japanese reading style which is from right to left.

4 Basic Categories of Manga

Often, manga are divided into 4 categories: Shounen, Shoujo, Seinen and Josei. Each categories have their specific target demographic. These categories are not styles or genre, rather they are labels that indicate the target demographic.

Shounen

Shounen comes from the japanese word 少年 meaning boy or youth. Shounen manga aims at teenage male readers. The age group varies with individual readers and different magazines, but it is primarily intended for boys ages between 12 to 18.   

Some of the popular shounen manga are One Piece, Naruto, Fairytail, Bleach and Dragon Ball.

Seinen

In Japanese, Seinen 青年 means "adult" or "adulthood." It aims at men readers ages between 20 to 50. Seinen manga tends to be more violent or too erotic than shounen manga.

Some famous seinen manga are Berseker, Hellsing, Gantz and Akira.

Shoujo

Shoujo comes from the japanese word  少女 meaning girl or young woman. While shounen manga aims teenage male readers, shoujo manga aims teenage female readers. Usually, shoujo manga features romantic themes and/or love-stories. 

Some popular shoujo manga are Ao Haru Ride, Bokura ga Ita, LOvely Complex, Dengeki Daisy, Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun, Kimi ni Todoke, Horimiya and Kaichou wa Maid-sama.

 Josei

Josei manga are japanese comics aimed at women in their late teens to adulthood. Josei portrays a more realistic romance as opposed to the idealistic shoujo manga. Josei tends to be more sexually explicit and mature appeal.

Some examples of Josei manga are, 07 Ghost, Karneval, Gokusen and Paradise Kiss.

    1. Well, shounen-ai and shoujo-ai are genre depicting boys love (mxm) and girls love (fxf) in particular order.

    1. Well, it depends. Usually, genre associated with shounen are fantasy, action and so on. But it could also be the same with the other categories. Ah! But mature contents are usually associated with Josei and Seinen.

  3. I'm not familiar with the manga, though I often heard it. I never thought that my fave anime that comes in a manga is called shounen. So cool! :)

    1. Manhwa is the Korean term of manga. Manhua is the Chinese term of manga. Basically, they differ in style and language.

  5. I used to read manga before but I was not thrilled while reading though the pictures are catchy. For the record I like anime :)

    1. Oh, YAOI/BL is a genre depicting boys love or malexmale pairs like shounen-ai. Albeit shounen-ai is much more lighter than YAOI/BL.

      YURI/GL is a genre depicting girls love or femalexfemale pairs like shoujo-ai. And like shounen-ai, shoujo-ai is much more lighter than YURI/GL.
